Have you ever wondered if it’s possible for anyone to learn how to sing? Or asked yourself if you have the talent to become a great singer? Are you most comfortable letting your inner sing-star loose when you’re in the shower, in the car, or while doing the dishes? Maybe you feel self-conscious about the overall sound of your voice or have experienced vocal strain or an injury that has kept your from achieving your singing goals. The question is: Will singing lessons help?
Whether you struggle with pitch, vocal control, or achieving your desired sound, learning to sing is no different than learning any other skill. It requires training and practise. In the Beginner program, we will break down the complicated mechanics of voice production and control, and help you gain a deeper understanding of your voice. We will work with you to develop a plan designed specifically to help you reach your singing goals, and provide vocal exercises for you to practise in order to strengthen and condition your voice.
In the beginning stages, singers usually require much more detailed feedback from their instructor in order to identify the areas that need improvement or emphasis. Beginner singers will spend a large portion of their lessons learning about the different parts of their voice (vocal anatomy); discovering the different sensations of their voice within their own body; and on skill development and strength training through scales and tailored exercises. Singers will then have an opportunity to apply what they have learned by practising a song of their choosing, allowing them to further their knowledge of efficient sound production through practical application, or in other words, learning by doing.
Depending on your skill level and the amount of time spent practising, the beginning stages can take some time. It may be challenging at first, but learning to sing makes the time you spend on your hobby more enjoyable.
Getting started
You don’t have to be the most seasoned vocalist to get started with singing lessons. It doesn’t matter if you’ve toured the world performing for sold-out crowds or performed for your reflection in the bathroom mirror. All that really matters is that you have a passion for or interest in singing.
From there, we can help you overcome your greatest obstacles when it comes to your voice. Whether you need help training your ear to sing in pitch, releasing the tension and/or strain that you experience while singing, or you need help building up your confidence in your voice, we will support you in achieving your goals and discovering your best voice.
Does singing make you feel nervous?
For beginner singers, the thought of singing in front of others can be anxiety-inducing. The nerves may cause your voice to become shaky when attempting to sing even a single note. This is common and completely normal for beginners. In fact, even some of the most seasoned pros experience nerves that affect their voice.
But for some, the anxious feeling can be a deterrent, holding them back from pursuing their passion of singing. At Registers Music, we understand how vulnerable and intimidated clients can feel while singing in an educational setting. Our goal has always been to create a relaxed and comfortable environment allowing clients to discover their voice while striving for excellence without fear of judgment.
Will singing lessons actually help?
A common question that comes up for a novice singer is whether or not they are a “good singer” and, correspondingly, whether singing lessons can actually help a “bad singer.” It’s important to remember that categorically there are no bad singers. There are only untrained singers. And training will always help to improve your skills.
The approach we suggest to any beginner singer is this: Allow everything that you do to be a complete disaster. In the early stages of vocal coaching, your voice might not sound its best, due to a number of factors, such as nerves and/or being out of practise. But allowing yourself to make mistakes shows us which areas to focus on and gives us direction when it comes to determining the techniques and training exercises best suited for you to achieve the singing voice you’ve always wanted.
How many singing lessons do I need?
With proper direction, practice, and dedication you’ll be able to improve your voice, thus, achieving a sound that you will be proud to showcase when singing in front of your friends, family, and even larger audiences. But ultimately, it will take time. Strengthening a singer’s voice does not happen in one lesson. It takes time to master the technique and pick up on how it should feel to sing with a properly trained voice.
The voice training process can takes months or even years, usually seeing singers gain an understanding of the fundamentals after the first month and noticing the change in their voice after 3-4 months. But the road to your best voice can take years of practise and training.
It is best to focus on enjoying the learning process and less on reaching your end goals, as your goal posts will move with your progression. Having short and long-term goals for your singing craft can be motivating and help set the course for your training. However, placing too much emphasis on the end goal can lead to feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction with your efforts or rate of progression, and create a barrier between you and your singing goals, thus, inhibiting your growth. Focusing on smaller goals and learning to celebrate every success along the way will be the key to achieving the voice you want and finding joy in the process.

All you need to get started is a device (phone, tablet, computer) with a stable internet connection and Zoom.
For an optimal experience, add an external webcam, microphone, audio interface, and headphones.
